Pair a light to the app
Updated yesterday
Pairing takes about a minute per light. You need the MOD LIGHTING app, your home Wi-Fi password, and the remote that came with the light.
Before you start
- Put your phone on your home Wi-Fi, not mobile data. If your router shows two networks, choose the 2.4 GHz one: your lights join 2.4 GHz only. See Wi-Fi for smart lights.
- Keep Bluetooth on. The app uses it to find a new light while you pair. Once the light is paired it talks over Wi-Fi, so Bluetooth can be off after that.
- Stand next to the light with its wall switch on, and switch your other smart lights off at the wall so only one is listening.
- Check that it is a smart version: "(Smart)" or "(Smart Lights)" in the light's name. A regular light runs on its remote and does not show in the app. See The MOD LIGHTING app for the full list.
The steps
- Open the MOD LIGHTING app, sign in, and tap Pair a light on the Home screen. Scroll down past any offers if you do not see it.
- Confirm your 2.4 GHz network and type its password. The password stays on your phone and is sent only to the light, never to us.
- If the app asks, allow Bluetooth (it finds the light) and Location (it reads your Wi-Fi name so you do not have to type it). Neither leaves your phone, and the app asks only once.
- When the app says it is searching, press and hold the pairing button in the middle of the remote for 5 to 10 seconds, until the light blinks, then let go.
- Stay next to the light. The app finds it, hands it your Wi-Fi details and ends on "Hello, light." Name it after where it is, and you are done.
Then the next light: switch it on at the wall, tap Pair a light again and repeat. One light at a time.
Good to know
- A search runs for up to 100 seconds and tries once more by itself. With Bluetooth off, the app looks over Wi-Fi only and can take up to two minutes.
- If several lights were found, choose the one you are setting up. The strongest signal is usually the one nearest your phone.
- Your remote keeps working after pairing. The light does whatever you did last, on the remote or in the app.
- Your first light also sets up your home. You can name it and add spaces then, or skip that and do it later.
