How to choose the right size

Add the room's length and width in feet and read the sum as inches of diameter: a 16 by 20-foot living room takes a piece around 36 inches across, and under-sizing is the commonest mistake in the room. Keep 7 feet of clearance under the lowest point anywhere people walk, and in a living room that usually means everywhere. Ceiling height sets the drop: 37 of the 52 are tagged for 10 to 12-foot ceilings, 8 for 9 to 10, and 6 for 8 to 9, where a flush piece such as Arina keeps the room open.
