Frequently asked questions about Obsidian
What defines the Obsidian Collection?
What pieces are in the collection?
Where does the collection work best?
What finishes and materials are used?
What size should I choose, and will it work on a sloped ceiling?
Crystal is usually set against silver or polished gold. Obsidian sets it against black, so the frame recedes and the crystal carries the light on its own. In a room with any depth of color, that contrast is the whole piece.
Black crystal, in four pieces
The Obsidian chandelier is the statement, in five sizes from x-small to x-large. A pendant follows in two sizes, a mini pendant in two styles for a row over an island, and the Obsidian Sconce takes the language to the wall. Each pairs a black finish with crystal layered across the frame rather than hung beneath it, and each runs warm white at 3000K.
Choosing a size
Use the room for the chandelier: length plus width in feet, read as inches, so a 14 by 16-foot dining room lands around 30 inches. Hang a pendant 30 to 36 inches above a table or island, and mount the sconce at 60 to 65 inches. Every piece works with a standard wall dimmer.
Rooms with depth of color
Obsidian belongs where the walls bring color of their own: a dining room in deep green, a paneled entry, a stairwell with a tall dark wall behind it. Against clean plaster it reads modern, against stone architectural. It sits beside the rest of MOD LIGHTING's black chandeliers, and beside the crystal chandelier collection when two rooms want related rather than matching statements.
Size the chandelier to the room first, then let the pendant or the sconce carry the language into the next one.
