What size light fixture does a kitchen need?
What color temperature is best for kitchen lighting?
How high should pendant lights hang above a kitchen island?
Which finishes work well in a kitchen?
Can I mix fixture types in one kitchen?
The kitchen is the busiest room in the house and often the most under-lit. A single ceiling light flattens the space and leaves the counters in shadow. These kitchen light fixtures are made to light the room in layers, the way a living space actually gets used.
Kitchen light fixtures, in three layers
Ambient light comes from a central flush mount, semi-flush, or chandelier. Task light lands where the work happens, usually pendant lighting over the island: Luka is a dimmable LED bar with an adjustable drop, Sylas stacks twenty to forty adjustable light bars, and Harris runs one to five heads along a track above a long counter.
Sizing, spacing, and warmth
Hang pendants 30 to 36 inches above the island surface: one or two for islands under five feet, three for a standard island, five past eight feet, with odd numbers usually reading more balanced. The central fixture takes the room formula, length plus width in feet read as inches. Keep the room between 2700K and 3000K, with the ambient layer on a dimmer.
Finishes, and the rooms around them
Polished nickel reads clean against white cabinetry, warm brass adds depth beside wood, and matte black grounds either palette. Mix deliberately, one dominant metal and one supporting. Where the kitchen opens onto a dining table, size the second fixture to the table and choose it from the dining room light fixtures. For a softer ceiling, Selene brings alabaster into the kitchen in two sizes.
Start at the island and work outward, then let the ambient layer fill in behind it.
