A light is chosen for a place, not for a category. The same chandelier is a statement in a foyer and a mistake in a bedroom; the same sconce is a reading light beside a bed and a mood light beside a sofa. Sorting by room puts the question in the order a real house asks it: which room, then which type, then which piece. Eight rooms live here: living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, office, foyer, and the patio and outdoor areas, and each one opens onto the types that suit it.

How to choose

Pick the room, then the type the room needs most. A dining room starts with the piece over the table, a bedroom with the light either side of the bed, a kitchen with the island, an entry with the stairwell. Size follows the room's dimensions on every page, in feet and inches, and each room's type pages carry the same three practical facts per light: how it mounts, whether it dims, and what ceiling height it is tagged for.

The living room lighting page starts with layers, a chandelier plus sconces plus a pendant in the corner. The dining room lighting page starts with the table and the piece over it. The bedroom lighting page starts at the bedside, the kitchen at the island, the office at the desk, the foyer in the stairwell, and the patio at the door. Every light here also lives under its own type, so you can come at it either way.
