What size wall sconce should I choose?
What color temperature is best for wall lights?
How high should a wall light hang?
Which finishes and materials suit a modern wall sconce?
Do wall lights need hardwiring, and what about outdoors?
A room lit from the ceiling alone goes flat after dark. A wall light works at eye level instead: it grazes texture, gives the interior its corners back, and puts warm light where people look. These modern wall sconces and wall lamps are made for that work, indoors and out, from the hallway to the front door.
Sconces, wall lamps, and what each is for
The category covers anything that mounts to the wall rather than the ceiling: sconces, wall lamps, bathroom vanity bars and linear strips. A wall light does one of three jobs. Architectural pieces wash the surface so the wall becomes the feature, as Aurelius Sconce does, built in polished steel on an iron body. Task pieces put light where the work is, reading at the bed or at the mirror. The rest are decorative sculpture at eye level: Halo in black or gold, crystal in Obsidian, alabaster in Alba, and the Luna moon lamp at the quiet end. Styles run from mid-century modern to contemporary, and many MOD LIGHTING fixtures come as a family with a matching chandelier and pendant.
Height, spacing, and the quality of light
Mount a sconce with its center 60 to 65 inches from the floor, just above standing eye level, and set a flanking pair 36 to 40 inches apart. Light at this height arrives at an angle, from the side rather than overhead, which flatters faces and gives flat walls their texture. Keep bulbs warm white, 2700K to 3000K, in living spaces; nearly everything here runs 3000K. Hardwiring hides the cord, so settle the wiring plan before the drywall closes.
Rooms where wall lights earn their place
Bedrooms first: a pair either side of the bed frees both nightstands and gives each reader a switch. In the bathroom, flank the mirror rather than lighting it from above. Hallways, stairways and the entryway take matched sconces at one height, so a pass-through joins the design. In the living room they flank a fireplace or a piece of art and make the space warmer at night. Outside, the standard holds at the front door and the patio: Haylen, a weather-sealed LED strip from 12 to 94 inches, comes in RGB, smart, solar and sensor versions. Beyond that, modern ceiling lights carry the ambient load, bathroom wall lighting covers the mirror wall, and outdoor exterior lighting continues past the door.
Decide indoor or outdoor first, then material: it narrows the field faster than style does. Measure to 60 inches, mark the wall and step back before you drill, and the right piece is easy to find.
