What an island asks of a pendant

Two jobs at once. Hung low, a pendant becomes task light, so the drop matters more than the diameter. Seen from the living room, the same pendant is the kitchen's one decorative object, so the shape has to hold up across an open plan. Seventeen of our pendants do both. How to choose the right size

One linear piece or a row. A linear pendant such as Luka, Sylas, Topaz, or Velina should run about two-thirds of the island's length, so a 96-inch island takes a 150 cm bar or a 40-bar Sylas. For a row, pendants of 8 to 12 inches across sit two or three to an island, spaced 24 to 30 inches apart, with the outer pair set in from the ends; odd numbers often balance best, though the island's length should decide the count. Hang the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the counter. All 17 are tagged for 8 to 9-foot ceilings and 16 for angled ceilings.
