A kitchen chandelier does two jobs: it lights the island where the work happens and it gives the room its centre. The linear fixtures here are made for that, long enough to cover an island and low enough to read as a chandelier rather than a row of pendants.

How to choose

Measure the island first. A linear fixture should be about two thirds of the island length and hang 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Over a round breakfast table a ring or a compact chandelier works better than a bar.
