Pendant vs Chandelier–The Comprehensive Guide

If you've decided you want a hanging light fixture, you have two basic choices: a chandelier or a pendant light.
We’ve outlined most of the differences between pendant lights and chandeliers above. Still, it should also be mentioned that chandeliers are often quite a bit heavier than pendants, which could be a consideration. When choosing a chandelier, be sure the existing mounting box is rated for the fixture’s weight; otherwise, the installation may be a bit more complicated.
So, when should you use a chandelier vs. a pendant? Smaller spaces that need a few lights or direct light, such as a kitchen island, benefit from what pendant lights offer. Larger spaces with high ceilings may require more light. In this case, a chandelier might be your best choice. Let’s drill down to look at the key differences.
A chandelier is one ceiling light suspended with multiple arms and multiple light bulbs incorporated. Because it uses multiple lights, chandelier lighting is quite beautiful in a grand foyer or the master suite as it adds a touch of elegance and, depending on the style, provides a decorative focal point that immediately draws the eye. You may imagine traditional crystal chandeliers when you think of these gorgeous fixtures with multiple lights arranged, but there are many post-modern and modern chandeliers as well.
Celestial is an example of a gorgeous statement chandelier that's as striking suspended above your dining table or in your large dining room or other formal spaces. It can also be used to light up your den, living room, or master suite. Its faceted crystals, suspended from the ceiling, softly play light through the room, matching traditional and modern interior design styles. Make Celestial the decorative centerpiece of your room.
The Obsidian chandelier is all modern luxury with stunning layers of black and crystal, but it’s also offered in mini-pendant style to extend your design from one room to the next. Install one chandelier for focused light, or light up an entire room with several lights. It is easily at home with modern and contemporary design styles and is sure to provide adequate lighting to any space.
For understated luxury, Angelica is a great pendant light option for both functional and statement lighting. This lighting design complements many diverse design styles from traditional to mid-century and beyond. Choose a larger profile with up to 10 LED lights for formal dining rooms or six-light models for kitchen islands, guest rooms, and home offices.
Pendants are popular lighting fixtures because they are highly versatile lighting solution as they can be used as a single pendant light for accent lighting or grouped together to light up larger surfaces or spaces. Each pendant light has a single light bulb incorporated into its fixture. Grouping them together gives you multiple light bulbs in the same space. These light fixtures are great for both functional and decorative purposes, including ambient lighting, focused lighting, and direct lighting for a single task.
We immediately imagine pendant lights in the kitchen, hanging above the island to light up meal prep, but they can also be used more subtly. For example, you might use one hanging light inside a nook inside your front door, providing soft and diffused light in your landing zone. When looking at options for spaces like these, a pendant light fixture provides more of a bold design statement than recessed lighting or track lights, while still being functional. Embrace their sleek lines and branching lights in your home.
Pendants look stylish suspended from the ceiling above your bedside table—and so much more practical than a lamp as they don’t clutter up surfaces. We love Jewels & Pearls for the bedroom, but this style is also gorgeous when grouped.
But pendants don’t always look like a teardrop. Take Luka, for example. This modern pendant fixture uses a band light housed in an elongated metal fixture, the ideal punctuation for an understated minimalist design. We love Luka in the kitchen or a dining room that leans toward a Scandi aesthetic. It’s simple, sleek, and practical, and it almost looks like it’s floating in mid-air.
Another consideration when choosing chandeliers vs. pendants is what type of light you need in the space. We can generally say that chandeliers are more ambient and cast a less concentrated light, so they are better suited to more casual settings that don’t require focused illumination.
Because they are often large, they also generally hang in grand spaces. Interior spaces such as living rooms, dining rooms, and lounge areas are excellent spots for chandeliers. Foyers can also be, but consider the size of the hall, stairways, and ceiling height to ensure the fixture will provide sufficient light.
Pendants can do double-duty as decorative fixtures and task lighting, but they are particularly well-suited to places that need directed illumination, such as in the kitchen, bathroom, above a work table, lighting up an architectural feature, or by your bedside. If choosing a pendant light for functional lighting, you may also be faced with the choice between incandescent light bulbs and LED lights. LED lights are more energy efficient and have become more common.
